Brandon Bussi

Brandon Bussi is a right-catching goaltender known for his unconventional path to the National Hockey League. Standing 6 feet 4 inches tall, Bussi was undrafted and spent time in the NAHL, NCDC, and USHL before playing three seasons at Western Michigan University. He later signed a professional contract with the Boston Bruins organization, where he played four seasons in the American Hockey League and earned AHL All-Star recognition. Despite his success in the Bruins system, Bussi did not make an NHL appearance with Boston, as the roster featured Jeremy Swayman and Vezina Trophy winner Linus Ullmark. He then signed with the Florida Panthers, was waived, and subsequently claimed by the Carolina Hurricanes.

Bussi made his NHL debut with the Hurricanes against the San Jose Sharks, earning a 5-1 victory. He became the fastest goaltender to reach 10 wins in NHL history and set a new league record for most wins by a goaltender through their first 25 games, surpassing marks held by Andrew Hammond and Bill Durnan. Bussi completed the regular season with a 31-6-2 record, a 2.47 goals-against average, a .895 save percentage, and two shutouts in 39 starts. His performance led to a three-year, $5.7 million contract extension with Carolina during the Olympic break.

In the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Bussi entered the lineup during the Final after Frederik Andersen started the previous rounds. Bussi won his first two career Stanley Cup Playoff starts, becoming the first goaltender in NHL history to win both of their first two postseason starts in the Stanley Cup Final. He recorded his first career Stanley Cup Playoff shutout in his third postseason start as Carolina defeated the Vegas Golden Knights 3-0 in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final. Bussi became the first American goaltender since Jonathan Quick to win the Cup-clinching game, accomplishing the feat with a shutout.

Throughout his career, Bussi has discussed the importance of mental resilience and personal growth, noting that developing mental toughness was a key factor in his progression as a professional hockey player. He adopted the phrase "House Money" as a guiding mindset and launched a hat sale campaign to benefit The Autism Society of North Carolina and Pucks for Autism, inspired by his brother Dylan, who is on the autism spectrum. Bussi's journey highlights perseverance and adaptability in professional hockey, and he continues to be a prominent figure on the Hurricanes' NHL roster.
