Brad Lightcap

Brad Lightcap is recognized for his operational leadership in artificial intelligence, playing a significant role in OpenAI's transformation from a small research nonprofit to a major technology company. Lightcap began his career as an investment banking analyst at J.P. Morgan, then moved to strategic finance at Dropbox, and later joined Y Combinator as an investor within its Continuity Fund, focusing on later-stage technology companies. This experience led to a professional relationship with Sam Altman and ultimately to his recruitment at OpenAI. Initially tasked with finding a finance leader for the organization, Lightcap assumed the role himself, becoming OpenAI's first business hire.

Lightcap joined OpenAI as chief financial officer and later became chief operating officer, where he built foundational business functions, including finance, legal, human resources, corporate security, go-to-market strategy, government relations, and partnerships. He expanded OpenAI's go-to-market team from about 50 to more than 700 employees, supporting the launch of products such as "GPT-4" and "ChatGPT Enterprise" as the company shifted its focus to enterprise artificial intelligence solutions.

During his tenure, Lightcap oversaw OpenAI's commercial operations with clients including Moderna, Uber, and Morgan Stanley, and managed international growth with new offices in Japan, Brazil, India, and Australia. He played a key role in maintaining organizational stability during internal challenges, including the brief ousting of CEO Sam Altman, by communicating directly with employees and clients. Lightcap also took on responsibility for international expansion and corporate partnerships with companies such as Microsoft and Apple.

As OpenAI evolved from a research lab to a global enterprise, Lightcap led business partnerships, product strategy, and the company's path to profitability. He also oversaw the OpenAI Startup Fund, which invests in early-stage companies advancing artificial intelligence. After nearly eight years, Lightcap announced his departure from OpenAI to pursue a new venture.
