Brad Lightcap

Brad Lightcap is the chief operating officer of OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence company. In this role, Lightcap oversees business operations, strategic partnerships, and the OpenAI Startup Fund, with responsibilities spanning research, applied AI, and go-to-market initiatives.

Lightcap began his career on Wall Street as an investment banking analyst at J.P. Morgan before moving to strategic finance at Dropbox. He later joined Y Combinator as an investor, working within its Continuity Fund focused on later-stage technology companies. Through this work, Lightcap developed a professional relationship with Sam Altman, which led to his recruitment at OpenAI. Initially tasked with finding a finance leader for the then-nascent organization, Lightcap ultimately assumed the role himself, becoming OpenAI's first business hire. He later served as chief financial officer before being named chief operating officer, contributing to OpenAI's transformation from a research lab to a global commercial entity.

During Lightcap's tenure, OpenAI has expanded its commercial operations, building a go-to-market team and advancing into the enterprise AI market with clients such as Moderna, Uber, and Morgan Stanley. Lightcap has overseen the company's international growth, including the establishment of offices in Japan, Brazil, India, and Australia. The introduction of "ChatGPT Enterprise" marked a significant milestone in enterprise AI adoption, with Lightcap emphasizing its role in solving business challenges. He also manages the OpenAI Startup Fund, supporting early-stage AI companies and providing access to OpenAI's models and resources.

Lightcap is recognized for his insights on artificial intelligence and enterprise technology, having appeared on CNBC's "Squawk on the Street" and participated in events such as Fortune Brainstorm AI, the Milken Institute Global Conference, and the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. He has contributed to discussions with McKinsey and Fortune's Term Sheet podcast, drawing on his academic background in economics and history from Duke University to analyze technological change and disruption. Lightcap leads special projects at OpenAI, focusing on complex deals and investments, and reports directly to CEO Sam Altman.
