Bon Iver

Bon Iver is an indie folk band founded by singer-songwriter Justin Vernon in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Initially conceived as a solo project, Bon Iver evolved into a full ensemble, with Vernon joined by Sean Carey, Michael Lewis, Matthew McCaughan, Andrew Fitzpatrick, and Jenn Wasner. The name Bon Iver is derived from the French phrase bon hiver, meaning "good winter," inspired by a greeting on the TV series Northern Exposure. After the breakup of his previous band DeYarmond Edison, the end of a relationship, and a period of illness, Vernon returned to Wisconsin and spent the winter months at his father's cabin in Dunn County, where he wrote and recorded the songs that would become Bon Iver's debut album.

Vernon uses Bon Iver as the vehicle for his introspective and experimental approach to indie folk music. The debut album, "For Emma, Forever Ago," introduced a sound characterized by acoustic guitars, subtle arrangements, and Vernon's falsetto vocals. Bon Iver received four Grammy Award nominations, including Best New Artist, Best Alternative Music Album, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year for "Holocene." The band won the Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Alternative Music Album. Pitchfork named "Bon Iver" the top album of the year. Subsequent releases continued to expand the band's musical boundaries. The third studio album, "22, A Million," incorporated electronic instrumentation and voice modulation, marking a departure from the earlier acoustic style. The fourth album, "i,i," was nominated for Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards.

Bon Iver is recognized for its influence on the indie folk and alternative music scenes and for its collaborative work. Vernon has worked with artists such as Taylor Swift and Kanye West, contributing to tracks like "Exile" from Swift's album "Folklore." He has also collaborated with Charli XCX and co-curated the Eaux Claires Music & Arts Festival in Eau Claire with Aaron Dessner of The National.
