Bobby Valentine

Bobby Valentine is recognized in Major League Baseball as a player, manager, broadcaster, and civic leader. Valentine played parts of 10 seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers, California Angels, San Diego Padres, New York Mets, and Seattle Mariners before moving into coaching and management. His playing career was impacted by a severe compound leg fracture with the Angels, which altered his trajectory, but his resilience and baseball knowledge became defining aspects of his legacy.

Valentine's managerial career is a significant part of his baseball story. He first managed the Texas Rangers, becoming the winningest manager in franchise history with 581 victories. He later managed the New York Mets, guiding the team from a fourth-place finish to consecutive playoff appearances, including a trip to the World Series after defeating the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Championship Series. Valentine finished his Mets tenure with 536 wins and one of the highest winning percentages in club history. Internationally, he managed the Chiba Lotte Marines in Nippon Professional Baseball, leading the team to a Pacific League pennant, a Japan Series championship, and the Asia Series title, while increasing team attendance through innovative fan engagement.

Valentine's influence extends beyond the field. Following the September 11 attacks, he coordinated relief efforts at Shea Stadium, organizing supplies for workers at Ground Zero. He received the Branch Rickey Award for humanitarian contributions and was honored with the Order of the Rising Sun by the Emperor of Japan for his cultural impact. Valentine also served as executive director of athletics at Sacred Heart University, overseeing nearly 1,000 student athletes and leading a major investment in the Bobby Valentine Health and Recreation Center.

In addition to his roles in baseball and academia, Valentine has been a media analyst for ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball and appeared on SNY and MLB Network. He co-authored the memoir "Valentine's Way: My Adventurous Life and Times" with Peter Golenbock and was the subject of the ESPN Films documentary "The Zen of Bobby V," which chronicled his time managing in Japan.
