Bobby Rahal

Bobby Rahal is recognized as a versatile figure in American motorsports. Over an 18-year career spanning Formula One, Can-Am, Le Mans/IMSA, and CART, Rahal secured three CART championships, including a win at the Indianapolis 500, as well as victories at the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring endurance races. After moving to CART, Rahal earned Rookie of the Year honors and competed in the series for 17 years.

Known as "Mr. Consistency" for his twelve top-five championship finishes, Rahal was the first CART driver to win $1 million in a season. His defining moment as a driver occurred at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where he passed Kevin Cogan on a restart with two laps remaining to win the Indianapolis 500, shortly before the passing of his team owner, Jim Trueman. Rahal became the first driver in Indy history to complete the 500 miles in less than three hours, at an average speed of 170.722 mph, setting a record for the fastest 500-mile Indy car race at that time. He went on to win his first CART championship that year and successfully defended the title the following season. As an owner-driver, Rahal later secured a third CART championship, becoming the last to do so in that capacity. He is a two-time Driver of the Year and was named by RACER Magazine as one of the 20 Greatest American Drivers of the 20th Century.

Rahal retired from competitive driving ranked first in career starts, second in career earnings, third in laps led, fourth in wins, and fifth in pole positions in CART history. Following his driving career, Rahal held managerial roles with the Jaguar Formula One team and served as interim president of the CART series. When Buddy Rice won the Indianapolis 500, Rahal joined a select group to have won the event as both a driver and a team owner. As co-owner of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, he also achieved an Indianapolis 500 victory with driver Takuma Sato.

Alongside David Letterman and Michael Lanigan, Rahal has overseen the growth of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing from a single-car program to a multi-car, multi-discipline organization. Rahal played a key role in bringing Honda into North American open-wheel racing, an involvement that has resulted in numerous drivers' championships and victories, including multiple Indianapolis 500 wins. Among his protégés are Graham Rahal, Jack Harvey, Christian Lundgaard, Takuma Sato, Oriol Servia, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Buddy Rice, and Danica Patrick.

Beyond racing, Rahal is the founder and chairman of the Bobby Rahal Automotive Group, a network of car dealerships in Pennsylvania. He serves as president of the Road Racing Drivers Club and sits on the board of directors for the Petersen Automotive Museum and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum. At WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, the back straight leading to the corkscrew is named the Rahal Straight in his honor. Rahal has been inducted into both the International Motorsports Hall of Fame and the 12 Hours of Sebring Hall of Fame. With a career spanning Formula One, endurance racing, and team ownership, Rahal continues to contribute significant experience and perspective to the motorsports industry.
