Billy Donovan

Billy Donovan is recognized as one of the most accomplished basketball coaches in the sport, with a career spanning college basketball and the NBA. Known as Billy the Kid to Providence fans, Donovan averaged more than 20 points and seven assists per game in his senior season and led the sixth-seeded Friars to the Final Four, earning Southeast Regional Most Valuable Player honors. He is one of only four men—alongside Dean Smith, Joe B. Hall, and Bobby Knight—to appear in the NCAA Final Four as a player and win the NCAA national championship as a coach. After a brief professional playing career, Donovan worked as a Wall Street stockbroker before following his mentor Rick Pitino to the University of Kentucky, where he developed his coaching skills as an assistant.

Donovan’s breakthrough came when he became the youngest Division I head coach in the country at Marshall University at age 28. After two seasons with the Thundering Herd, Donovan became head coach at the University of Florida, where the Gators emerged as a leading force in college basketball. After two losing seasons while rebuilding the roster, Donovan’s Gators began a streak of 16 straight 20-win seasons, a period that included multiple conference championships, four Final Four appearances, two NCAA championships, and three SEC Coach of the Year awards. He spent 19 seasons at the University of Florida, where his teams won back-to-back NCAA championships and achieved more NCAA tournament appearances, tournament wins, and Southeastern Conference championships than all other Florida coaches combined.

Donovan earned two national championships, six SEC titles, four Final Fours, and 17 consecutive postseason appearances at Florida. He became the second coach in Division I history to record more than 500 career wins before turning 50, and achieved the highest win percentage of any Florida coach who spent multiple seasons in Gainesville. The United States Sports Academy presented Donovan with the Amos Alonzo Stagg Award, and he received the John R. Wooden Award's Legends of Coaching Award. He sent 18 players to the NBA Draft from Florida, including Joakim Noah, Al Horford, Bradley Beal, Corey Brewer, Jason Williams, and Mike Miller.

Before joining the Chicago Bulls, Donovan was the head coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder, where he led the team to five consecutive NBA Playoffs berths, including an appearance at the Western Conference Finals. He was named the NBA Coaches Association Coach of the Year and later became head coach of the Chicago Bulls until 2026. His NBA record—438-365—ranks him among the top 50 coaches in regular-season victories in league history.

Donovan was selected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as part of a class that included Carmelo Anthony, Micky Arison, Sue Bird, Danny Crawford, Dwight Howard, Sylvia Fowles, Maya Moore, and the 2008 Men's United States Olympic Basketball Team. His enshrinement made him the league's only active Hall of Fame coach at the time. Donovan’s ability to adapt his coaching style to fit the strengths of his players and his commitment to player development have been defining features of his coaching philosophy, contributing to his enduring impact on basketball at both the collegiate and professional levels.
