Beverly Gooden Biography
Beverly Gooden is an award-winning writer, activist, and creator of the viral social media movement, #WhyIStayed. She is the author of the memoir Surviving: Why We Stay & How We Leave Abusive Relationships (2022) and the founder of The Bolt Bag Project, an initiative providing emergency escape bags to victims of intimate partner violence at no cost.
Gooden was honored by Investigation Discovery and Glamour Magazine as their 2015 Inspire A Difference “Everyday Hero” and has partnered with the Allstate Foundation’s “Purple Purse” campaign to produce web videos addressing financial abuse. She has been interviewed on Good Morning America, NPR’s On Point and All Things Considered, among other outlets.
Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Gooden is a graduate of Hampton University and Loyola University Chicago, where her master’s thesis examined institutional responses to single women experiencing intimate partner violence. She is passionate about art, equity, and accessible beauty, believing that thriving includes loving how you look and feel.
