Beverly Gage

Beverly Gage is the John Lewis Gaddis Professor of History and professor of American Studies at Yale University, where she teaches courses on 20th-century U.S. history, American politics, government, and social movements. Gage's scholarship focuses on pivotal moments in American history, with research and analysis that contribute to the fields of political history, government, and social movements. She previously directed the Brady-Johnson Program in Grand Strategy, stepping down from the role amid concerns over donor influence on academic freedom, highlighting her commitment to intellectual independence.

Gage is the author of "G-Man: J. Edgar Hoover and the Making of the American Century," which received the Pulitzer Prize for Biography, the Bancroft Prize in American History, the National Book Critics Circle Award in Biography, and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in Biography. The book provides a detailed portrait of the longtime FBI director, examining both his achievements and his controversial actions, including intimidation tactics against civil rights leaders and covert operations such as the capture of Nazi saboteurs. Gage also wrote "The Day Wall Street Exploded: A Story of America in Its First Age of Terror," which explores the 1920 Wall Street bombing and the era's terrorism, contributing to scholarship on U.S. security and political history.
