Benjamin W. Heineman Jr. Biography
Benjamin W. Heineman Jr. is an American journalist, lawyer, government official, business executive, academic, and author. Currently, he is a Distinguished Senior Fellow at Harvard Law School's Program on the Legal Profession and a Senior Fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. Among his many academic roles, Heineman also serves as a lecturer at Yale Law School. He has contributed vastly to the academic world with four books: "The Inside Counsel Revolution: Resolving the Partner-Guardian Tension," "High Performance with High Integrity," "Memorandum for the President: A Strategic Approach to Domestic Affairs in the 1980s," and "The Politics of the Powerless: A Study of the Campaign Against Racial Discrimination."
Heineman has a significant background in the legal field, having been GE's senior vice president-general counsel from 1987 to 2003 and then senior vice president for law and public affairs from 2004 until his retirement at the end of 2005. His writings express his views on the roles of lawyers and the key dimensions of corporate governance. His teachings include courses on "Lawyers as Leaders" and "Corporate Citizenship and Public Policy" at Harvard and Yale. Heineman's work has garnered him numerous awards and honors, including the Rhodes Scholarship and being named one of the "50 Top Innovators in Law in Past 50 Years" by American Lawyer Magazine.
Heineman's extensive work extends beyond the academic and legal field. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a member of the American Philosophical Society. He is a member of the board of managers of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and a member of the board of Partners for Justice. He also serves on the boards of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Transparency International-USA, and Central European University. His diverse experiences and roles in the legal, academic, and business world make him a well-rounded and knowledgeable figure in these fields.
