Awny Farajallah

Awny Farajallah, M.D., FACP, is a physician and strategic leader whose career spans academic medicine and global pharmaceutical innovation. Farajallah has more than 25 years of combined experience in academic and industry settings related to clinical research, drug development, and medical affairs across multiple therapeutic areas. He earned his M.D. from Cairo University and completed an internal medicine residency and infectious diseases fellowship at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and New Jersey Medical School, respectively. His clinical background in infectious disease and internal medicine has informed a career focused on patient outcomes and scientific rigor.

Farajallah serves as chief medical officer at Takeda Pharmaceuticals, where he leads the company’s global medical organization and shapes how science, innovation, and partnership translate into impact for patients worldwide. He joined Takeda as the head of Global Medical Affairs Oncology before assuming his current role overseeing the company’s global medical strategy. Farajallah’s approach centers on scientific evidence generation, elevating organizational capabilities, and ensuring early patient access to medicines. He has advocated for the use of real-world evidence to improve clinical trial inclusivity and diversity.

Before joining Takeda, Farajallah held senior leadership roles at major pharmaceutical companies. At Ipsen, he served as senior vice president of medical affairs, North America, leading efforts to enhance medical affairs capabilities and expand impact through partnerships across oncology, neuroscience, and rare disease. Prior to Ipsen, he was vice president and head of U.S. medical affairs at Bristol Myers Squibb, where he led functions including field medical, disease areas, medical education, biomarkers, promotional material review, portfolio strategy, and strategic collaborations across oncology, immunoscience, and cardiovascular medicine. In these roles, Farajallah built and led medical organizations, guided therapeutic launches, and fostered partnerships across the healthcare ecosystem to strengthen standards of care and patient outcomes.

Farajallah is recognized for his advocacy of health equity and patient-centered innovation. He has written about health inequity as a global challenge, particularly in oncology, and has highlighted the importance of improving health equity worldwide. Farajallah has also promoted the use of human-focused artificial intelligence and real-world data to advance global access to medicines, viewing these tools as transformative for the pharmaceutical industry. His work on the INTERCEPT research project—a collaboration between private and public sectors to study biomarkers that may signal the presence of Crohn’s disease before symptoms arise—demonstrates his commitment to cross-sector partnership in medical research.

Farajallah has participated in international forums such as the Aspen Ideas Festival, discussing how clinical, real-world, and patient-reported data are reshaping drug development and delivery.
