Avantika Vandanapu, known professionally as Avantika, is an American actress, producer, model, and dancer whose career spans Telugu cinema, Bollywood, and Hollywood. She began classical dance training at age 4 and won second place in the Zee TV dance competition reality series "Dance India Dance L'il Masters" (North America Edition). Vandanapu took drama lessons at the American Conservatory Theater, building a formal foundation for her acting career. Trained in ballet, contemporary, and Indian classical dance forms such as Kuchipudi and Kathak, her artistic range is notable within the entertainment industry.
Vandanapu made her official debut as a child artist in "Brahmotsavam," starring Mahesh Babu. She later cited the lack of variety in roles offered in Telugu cinema as a reason for her transition to American productions. Vandanapu played the lead role of Rhea Kumar in the Disney Channel Original Movie "Spin," becoming the network's first Indian-American lead. The Emmy-nominated film brought her recognition and a spot on Variety's Power of Young Hollywood "Up Next" list. She expanded her Hollywood presence with roles in Netflix's "Senior Year" and "Moxie."
Vandanapu portrayed Karen Shetty in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical "Mean Girls," based on the 2004 movie. She discussed the significance of playing a South Asian character not defined by stereotypes. The film received mixed reviews, but her performance was highlighted by The Guardian as a standout. "Mean Girls" achieved commercial success, with The Times of India crediting the film for helping establish her presence in American cinema. Additional credits include the horror film "Tarot" and the Amazon Prime series "Big Girls Don't Cry," India's first young-adult high school fiction series with an all-girls cast. She also appeared alongside Maddie Ziegler and Lana Condor in Vicky Jewson's action thriller film "Pretty Lethal."
As a producer, Vandanapu is the youngest South Asian actor to star in and executive produce the "A Crown of Wishes" series, which she optioned and sold to Disney+ as its first Indian Hindu mythology-based series. The young adult fantasy series features her as Princess Gauri. She is also set to headline Mindy Kaling's comedy series "Not Suitable for Work." Vandanapu attends Columbia University, balancing academic pursuits with her expanding career. She is committed to portraying and producing stories that highlight marginalized communities and advance South Asian representation in global entertainment.
