Athing Mu

Athing Mu is a middle-distance runner recognized for her achievements in the 800 meters and her impact on American track and field. Mu began her career by focusing on club competitions rather than high school events, which contributed to her early success in breaking national records. At age 16, she set the American record in the 600 meters with a time of 1:23.57 at the USA Track and Field Indoor Championships. After graduating from Trenton Central High School, Mu attended Texas A&M University, where she set six all-time collegiate records and posted 11 all-time top-12 marks during her collegiate season.

Mu reached the international spotlight at the Tokyo Olympics, where she won gold medals in both the women's 800 meters and the women's 4x400-meter relay. In the 800 meters, she secured a wire-to-wire victory and broke the U.S. women's 800-meter record with a time of 1 minute, 55.21 seconds. This win marked the first American victory in the event in more than five decades. At 19, Mu became the youngest U.S. woman to win an individual Olympic track and field title since Wyomia Tyus. In the 4x400-meter relay, her anchor leg split of 48.32 seconds contributed to a world-leading time of 3:16.85.

Following her Olympic debut, Mu continued to earn accolades, including a world gold medal in the women's 800 meters at the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon. This achievement made her the youngest woman to hold both Olympic and World Championships titles in an individual athletics event. Mu also set the U.S. record in the women's 800 meters with a time of 1 minute, 54.97 seconds at the Prefontaine Classic. She has been recognized as the top Female Rising Star by World Athletics and is a recipient of the Bowerman Award, which honors the top collegiate track and field athlete in the United States.

Mu's career has included challenges, including injuries and the pressures associated with elite competition. After winning NCAA, national, world, and Olympic championships before turning 21, Mu earned a bronze medal at the World Championships. She later took a break from competition to address the demands of her career and personal well-being. Returning to competition after a hamstring injury, Mu fell in the final at the U.S. Olympic Trials and did not advance to defend her Olympic title. Despite these setbacks, Mu remains a prominent figure in track and field, known for her speed, resilience, and influence on themes such as perseverance and identity in athletics.
