Ashanti Johnson Biography
Ashanti Johnson, PhD is a geochemist, chemical oceanographer, and national leader in STEM education and diversity. She made history as the first African American to earn a PhD in oceanography from Texas A&M University, and her research focuses on aquatic radiogeochemistry, examining environmental changes across marine and freshwater systems.
Beyond her scientific work, Johnson is widely recognized for advancing diversity in STEM. She founded the Minorities Striving and Pursuing Higher Degrees of Success in Earth System Science (MS PHD’S) initiative, a nationally impactful mentorship program supporting underrepresented students in advanced scientific fields.
Johnson has held faculty and leadership roles at multiple institutions and served as Executive Director of the Institute for Broadening Participation. She is also the founding CEO and superintendent of Cirrus Academy, a STEAM-focused charter school network. Her contributions have earned national recognition, including the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring.
