Anthony Rapp

Anthony Rapp is an American actor and singer whose career spans Broadway, film, and television, making him a prominent figure in contemporary musical theater. Rapp began acting and singing professionally at age nine, developing a body of work that demonstrates range and artistic commitment. He first appeared on screen in Chris Columbus' comedy "Adventures in Babysitting" and has built a résumé across stage and screen.

Rapp is known for originating the role of Mark Cohen in Jonathan Larson's Tony Award- and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, "Rent," for which he shared an Obie Award with the cast. Larson wrote new songs for the production with Rapp's voice in mind. He reprised the role in the film adaptation and the show's United States tour. Rapp's stage work also includes performing as Charlie Brown in the Broadway revival of "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" and originating the role of Lucas in the musical "If/Then." His Broadway credits include "Six Degrees of Separation" and "Precious Sons," for which he received an Outer Critics Circle Award and a Drama Desk nomination.

Rapp played Commander Paul Stamets on the television series "Star Trek: Discovery," portraying the franchise's first openly gay character, astromycologist Lt. Paul Stamets. His film and television credits include "School Ties," "Dazed and Confused," "A Beautiful Mind," The Knick, The Good Fight, and "13 Reasons Why."

Rapp is also an author and solo performer. He published the memoir "Without You: A Memoir of Love, Loss, and the Musical Rent," which recounts his experiences related to "Rent," Jonathan Larson, and the death of his mother from breast cancer. He adapted the memoir into a one-man show that toured the United States and London. Rapp released a solo CD, "Look Around." As a public speaker, he discusses his career, the loss of Jonathan Larson, his mother's battle with cancer, and the social impact of "Rent" in raising awareness of LGBT, HIV/AIDS, and poverty issues.

Rapp serves on the board of Friends In Deed, a nonprofit organization providing emotional support for individuals with HIV/AIDS, cancer, or other life-threatening illnesses, as well as their families, friends, and caregivers. He has advocated for greater representation and inclusivity, particularly for LGBTQ+ individuals in the arts. With a career that bridges theater, film, and television, Rapp is a significant voice in American entertainment, known for his contributions to musical theater, LGBTQ+ advocacy, and the performing arts.
