Animashree Anandkumar is the Bren Professor of Computing at California Institute of Technology, recognized for her work at the intersection of artificial intelligence and the physical sciences. Anandkumar has held leadership roles in the technology industry, including Senior Director of Machine Learning Research at NVIDIA and Principal Scientist at Amazon Web Services. Her research encompasses theoretical and applied machine learning, with emphasis on tensor-algebraic methods, large-scale learning, deep learning, probabilistic models, and non-convex optimization.
Anandkumar's work with neural operators—AI models designed to predict complex physical processes—has contributed to advancements in scientific computing, enabling faster simulations in areas such as fluid dynamics and material science. These neural operators learn in function spaces and simulate multi-scale processes significantly faster than traditional computational methods. Her AI algorithms have accelerated applications in weather forecasting and carbon capture modeling, supporting efforts in climate science. Anandkumar's AI method, OrbNet, has advanced quantum chemistry by enabling rapid calculations compared to conventional approaches. In collaboration with Caltech researchers, she contributed to the development of an AI-driven catheter prototype that reduced bacterial contamination by simulating fluid flow to optimize design.
Anandkumar serves on the United Nations Secretary General's Scientific Advisory Board, advising on the integration of emerging technologies in global policy. She has presented her research to the White House Science Council, the National AI Advisory Committee, and at TED. Anandkumar is also a member of the World Economic Forum's Expert Network.
Her honors include the Time 100 Impact Award, the IEEE Kiyo Tomiyasu Award, the Schmidt Sciences AI2050 Senior Fellowship, and recognition from the Guggenheim, Alfred P. Sloan, and Blavatnik Foundations, as well as the NSF Career Award and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Indian Institute of Technology Madras. Anandkumar is a Fellow of IEEE and ACM, and has received best paper awards at venues such as the ACM Gordon Bell Special Prize for HPC-Based COVID-19 Research. Her work has been featured in documentaries on PBS and KPCC, and in publications including MIT Technology Review, Forbes, and Wired magazine. Anandkumar's contributions continue to shape the fields of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and scientific computing.
