Ania M. Jastreboff

Ania M. Jastreboff, MD, PhD, is a physician-scientist specializing in obesity medicine and endocrinology. Jastreboff holds the Harvey and Kate Cushing Professor of Medicine (Endocrinology) and Professor of Pediatrics (Pediatric Endocrinology) chair at Yale School of Medicine. As founding director of the Yale Obesity Research Center (Y-Weight) and co-director of the Yale Center for Weight Management, she focuses on the scientific development and clinical application of anti-obesity pharmacotherapeutics in obesity treatment.

After completing a Med/Peds residency, Jastreboff pursued a dual fellowship in adult and pediatric endocrinology while earning a PhD in the neurobiology of obesity. She is board certified in five specialties: endocrinology, pediatric endocrinology, obesity medicine, internal medicine, and pediatrics.

Jastreboff's research in obesity medicine includes large, multi-center clinical outcomes trials using anti-obesity medication and neuroimaging studies examining the neurobiology underlying obesity and the mechanisms of anti-obesity medications. She served as site principal investigator at Yale and lead author for SURMOUNT-1, a study demonstrating significant weight loss in people with obesity treated with the GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist tirzepatide, published in New England Journal of Medicine. Her research has received support from NIH/NIDDK, the American Diabetes Association, and industry-funded clinical trials. As founding director of Y-Weight, Jastreboff leads studies of dual- and triple-receptor hormone agonists and NIH-funded investigations into the physiology of obesity.

Jastreboff is recognized in the obesity medicine field for developing Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Comprehensive Care of Patients with Obesity and for educating physicians at Harvard Blackburn Treating Obesity and Columbia/Cornell Obesity courses. She serves as vice-chair of the Clinical Care Committee of The Obesity Society and as a director on the American Board of Obesity Medicine. Jastreboff received the Clinician of the Year Award from The Obesity Society for her work in obesity care.

Jastreboff is active in public education on obesity, participating in interviews on CBS Sunday Morning, TODAY, and The View. She co-authored the book "Enough: Your Health, Your Weight, and What It's Like to Be Free," which became a No. 1 national bestseller and a New York Times Bestseller. Through her book, public speaking, research, and patient care, Jastreboff communicates the science of obesity biology and advocates for compassionate care for people living with obesity. Her research contributes to advancements in obesity treatment and has implications for the prevention and management of related diseases.
