Angela Stent

Angela Stent is a leading expert on Russian foreign policy and U.S.-Russia relations, recognized for her decades of scholarship, government service, and public commentary. She is a Senior Advisor to the Center for Eurasian, Russian, and East European Studies and Professor Emerita of Government and Foreign Service at Georgetown University. Stent previously served as Director of the Center and has been a prominent voice in shaping the understanding of Russia’s role in global affairs. Her government experience includes serving as National Intelligence Officer for Russia and Eurasia at the National Intelligence Council and as an advisor in the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Policy Planning.

Stent is the author of several acclaimed books, including "Putin’s World: Russia Against the West and with the Rest," which won the Fletcher School’s prize for the best book on U.S.-Russia relations, and "The Limits of Partnership: U.S.-Russian Relations in the Twenty-First Century," for which she won the American Academy of Diplomacy’s Douglas Dillon prize for the best book on the practice of American Diplomacy. Known for her clear-eyed analysis and nuanced understanding of geopolitical dynamics, she frequently appears in major media outlets and speaks at international policy forums.

Stent is a member of the senior advisory panel for NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander in Europe. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. She is a contributing editor to Survival and is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Cold War Studies, World Policy Journal, Internationale Politik and Mirovaia Ekonomika i Mezhdunarodnie Otnosheniie. She has served on the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council for Russia and Central Asia. She is a Trustee of the Eurasia Foundation and of Supporters of Civil Society in Russia.

Stent received her BA from Cambridge University, her MSc. with distinction from the London School of Economics and Political Science and her MA and PhD from Harvard University.
