Andy Greenberg

Andy Greenberg is an award-winning senior writer for WIRED, where he covers cybersecurity, privacy, surveillance, information freedom and hacker culture. Widely regarded as one of the leading journalists in his field, he was named a SANS Institute Top Cybersecurity Journalist in 2014 and has won multiple Gerald Loeb Awards for his reporting on global cyberconflict and digital crime.

Greenberg received the Gerald Loeb Award for International Reporting in 2019 for “The Code That Crashed the World,” a definitive account of the NotPetya cyberattack, widely considered the most destructive cyberattack in history. He earned another Gerald Loeb Award in 2023 for the feature “The Crypto Trap: Inside the Bitcoin Bust That Took Down the Web’s Biggest Child Abuse Site,” which examined the intersection of cryptocurrency and online criminal networks.

He is the author of “Sandworm: A New Era of Cyberwar and the Hunt for the Kremlin’s Most Dangerous Hackers,” an acclaimed investigation into Russian state-sponsored hacking. Sandworm and related reporting published in WIRED won a Gerald Loeb Award for International Reporting, two Deadline Club Awards from the New York Society of Professional Journalists, and the Cornelius Ryan Citation for Excellence from the Overseas Press Club. Greenberg also wrote “This Machine Kills Secrets: How WikiLeakers, Cypherpunks, and Hacktivists Aim to Free the World’s Information” (2012), which was selected as an Editor’s Choice by The New York Times Book Review.

Before joining WIRED, Greenberg was a staff writer at Forbes, where he was nominated for a Gerald Loeb Award and won the Security Bloggers Network’s award for Single Best Blog Post of the Year. His reporting on the remote hacking of a Jeep Cherokee by researchers Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek helped prompt Chrysler to recall 1.4 million vehicles. Greenberg has also appeared in the documentary film “Deep Web” and continues to report on the evolving front lines of cybersecurity from Brooklyn, New York, where he lives with his wife, filmmaker Malika Zouhali-Worrall.
