Andrew G. Acho is a nationally recognized expert in environmental stewardship and sustainable business practices, known for his extensive work at Ford Motor Company. Acho began leading environmental initiatives at Ford in 1990 and held various positions over four decades, most recently serving as worldwide director of environmental outreach and strategy. This role was created specifically for Acho by Bill Ford, reflecting the unique contributions he made to the organization.
During his tenure at Ford, Acho led a range of initiatives focused on sustainability and corporate environmental responsibility. He launched and managed Ford's Recycling Action Team, known as The RAT Patrol, which developed and implemented uses for post-consumer recycled materials such as plastic and rubber. Acho oversaw recycling and re-use programs that promoted recycled content in Ford vehicles, managed facility waste streams, and facilitated the recycling of more than eight million Firestone Wilderness AT tires. The tire recycling program, implemented at over 4,600 Ford and Lincoln/Mercury dealerships, resulted in the recycling of more than 150 million pounds of rubber for use in molded products, athletic fields, and playgrounds. Acho also led Ford's global Conservation and Environmental Grants program in more than 40 countries, recognizing organizations and individuals for their contributions to environmental protection and preservation.
Acho's work has been recognized with several honors. He was among the first to receive the Wildlife Habitat Council's President's Award for his commitment to environmental preservation and his global perspective on sustainability. He later served on the council's board of directors. Acho was also appointed chairman of the Great Lakes Recycle Board, a group representing eight Midwest governors. In addition, he served as chairman of the corporate advisory board at Smith College's Picker Engineering Program, supporting the education of environmentally responsible engineers.
After retiring from Ford, Acho has continued to advise organizations on environmental protection and sustainable business strategies. He speaks at universities and corporate conferences, sharing insights from his experience with Ford and the Recycling Action Team. Acho defines sustainability as the ability of the current generation to meet its needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. He is a contributing author to the book "Becoming A Green Innovator," which promotes green business practices. Through keynote speaking and advisory work, Acho demonstrates that environmental responsibility and business profitability can coexist, a message that resonates across industries.
