
Andrew Moravcsik is a scholar in the field of international relations and European integration. Moravcsik serves as professor of politics and international affairs, director of the Liechtenstein Institute on Self-Determination, and founding director of the European Union Program and the International Relations Faculty Colloquium at Princeton University. His academic research and policy writing focus on European integration, international organizations, and the development of the theory of liberal intergovernmentalism. Moravcsik is among the most cited U.S.-based political scientists of his cohort.
Moravcsik holds a BA from Stanford, an MA from Johns Hopkins (SAIS), and a PhD from Harvard University, and has attended German and French universities. He began teaching at Harvard University's Department of Government, where he became a full professor and founded Harvard's European Union program. Moravcsik later joined Princeton University, where he continues to contribute to the study of European politics and international affairs. He holds a lifetime appointment as distinguished affiliated professor at Technische Universität München in Munich, Germany, and teaches annually as non-resident professor at the Florence School for Transnational Governance at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy.
Moravcsik has authored over 125 scholarly publications, including four books, on topics such as European integration, international relations theory, qualitative and historical methods, human rights, international law, and international organizations. His book, "The Choice for Europe," has been described by the American Historical Review as a significant work in the field. He also edited and contributed to "Europe beyond Illusions" and "Between Centralization and Fragmentation," which report the results of a Council on Foreign Relations Study Group he co-directed. Moravcsik developed "active citation," a precursor to ATI, a digital transparency format for qualitative social science.
Before his academic career, Moravcsik served in policy positions for governments on three continents, including as an international trade negotiator at the U.S. Department of Commerce, special assistant to South Korean Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hahn-Been, press assistant at the Commission of the European Communities, and editor of a Washington-based foreign policy journal. He has held leadership roles on policy commissions organized by the Council on Foreign Relations, Brookings Institution, Carnegie Endowment, Commission of the European Communities, Princeton University, and other organizations. Moravcsik has published over 150 opinion pieces and policy analyses and serves as book review editor (Europe) at Foreign Affairs.
His research has been supported by the National Science, Ford, Fulbright, Olin, Krupp, and German Marshall Foundations, the Institute for Advanced Study, and various universities and institutes. Moravcsik received the Berlin Prize from the American Academy in Berlin and the Stanley Kelley Award for Undergraduate Teaching from Princeton University. His research includes comparative studies of the impact of radical-right populist parties on democratic foreign policy, contributing to scholarship in international relations, European studies, and political science.
