Andrew Moore

Andrew Moore is a renowned computer scientist, artificial intelligence researcher, and academic leader whose career has spanned some of the most influential institutions in technology and higher education. Widely recognized for his contributions to machine learning, robotics, and data science, Moore has helped shape both the research landscape of artificial intelligence and the practical deployment of AI technologies in industry. He earned his doctorate from the University of Cambridge and joined Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in 1993, where he quickly established himself as a leading scholar in computer science and robotics.

At Carnegie Mellon, Moore founded and led the Auton Lab, a pioneering research group focused on machine learning, data mining, and the application of AI to real-world challenges. His research explored diverse areas ranging from manufacturing optimization and astronomy to public health and cybersecurity. Through collaborations with government agencies, universities, and private-sector partners, his work helped advance practical applications of large-scale data analytics and intelligent systems.

In 2006, Moore left academia to join Google, where he became the founding director of the company’s Pittsburgh engineering office. Under his leadership, the office grew from a small startup-style operation into one of Google's major engineering hubs. As a Google vice president, he oversaw engineering efforts supporting products and infrastructure related to Search, Shopping, AdWords, and machine learning technologies, while helping strengthen the longstanding relationship between Google and Carnegie Mellon.

Moore returned to Carnegie Mellon in 2014 to serve as Dean of the world-renowned Carnegie Mellon University School of Computer Science. During his tenure, he oversaw significant growth in enrollment, expanded interdisciplinary programs, championed diversity initiatives, and helped elevate the university’s leadership in artificial intelligence research. He also became a prominent voice on AI policy, including testimony before the U.S. Senate regarding the nation’s need to develop a larger AI workforce.

In 2019, Moore returned to Google to lead the company’s Cloud AI organization, helping drive the development and adoption of artificial intelligence tools for businesses and developers worldwide.
