Andrei Svechnikov

Andrei Svechnikov is a Russian professional ice hockey winger for the Carolina Hurricanes of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Hurricanes selected Svechnikov second overall in the NHL Entry Draft, following his standout performance in junior hockey. He was named to the All-USHL Team and earned USHL Rookie of the Year honors before moving to the Ontario Hockey League, where he was named OHL Rookie of the Year and received the Emms Family Award after leading all rookies with 40 goals and 72 points in 44 games with the Barrie Colts. Svechnikov was ranked the top North American skater by the NHL Central Scouting Bureau.

Svechnikov scored his first NHL goal during a win against the New York Rangers, becoming the first player born in the 2000s to score an NHL goal. He was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team as voted by the Professional Hockey Writers Association. Svechnikov also made history by becoming the first NHL player to score a Michigan goal, lifting the puck on his stick to score a lacrosse-style goal. He earned his first NHL All-Star selection, representing the Metropolitan Division as the "Last Man In" via fan voting, and won the Fastest Skater event at All-Star Skills.

Svechnikov's career was interrupted by a torn ACL suffered against the Vegas Golden Knights, which required season-ending surgery. After a seven-month recovery, Svechnikov returned to the ice for the Hurricanes. He has stated there have been no lingering effects from the injury.

Svechnikov posted a career-high 31 goals and 70 points across 79 regular-season games, including 12 goals and 29 points on the power play. He played a key role in helping the Carolina Hurricanes clinch the Stanley Cup, scoring two goals in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final to give the Hurricanes a 3-2 series lead. Svechnikov delivered the first multi-power-play-goal game of his postseason career in the Final, joining Eric Staal as the only Hurricanes players to accomplish that feat. He led the Hurricanes and finished second among all playoff scorers with eight goals.

Svechnikov signed an eight-year contract extension with the Carolina Hurricanes worth $62 million. He has been part of a dependable core for the Hurricanes since being drafted and, with a Stanley Cup championship on his résumé, has established himself among the top players in professional hockey.
