Andrea Wulf is a historian and author whose work explores the history of science, nature, and ideas. Wulf trained in design history at the Royal College of Art in London and has authored several books, including "Founding Gardeners," "Brother Gardeners," and "The Invention of Nature." "The Invention of Nature" examines the life and legacy of Prussian naturalist, explorer, and geographer Alexander von Humboldt, tracing his early years, travels through Europe and Latin America, and his return to Europe. The book presents Humboldt's vision of nature as an interconnected system, synthesizing knowledge from various scientific fields. It has received multiple international awards, including the Royal Society Science Book Award, the Costa Biography Award, and the LA Times Book Prize, and was recognized by the New York Times as one of the "10 Best Books" of its year. Literary Hub also named it one of the 20 Best Works of Nonfiction of the Decade.
Wulf's earlier works, such as "The Brother Gardeners" and "Founding Gardeners," highlight the influence of the natural world on history and culture. "The Brother Gardeners" received the American Horticultural Society Book Award and was long-listed for the Samuel Johnson Prize, while "Founding Gardeners" appeared on the New York Times Best Seller List. Wulf has contributed to publications including The New York Times, The Guardian, Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Atlantic. She has served as the Eccles British Library Writer in Residence and as a fellow of the International Center for Jefferson Studies at Monticello.
Her book "Magnificent Rebels: The First Romantics and the Invention of the Self" explores the early German Romantics in Jena, such as Goethe, Schiller, and Hegel, and their impact on modern ideas of individual freedom. Wulf also co-presented "British Gardens in Time," a four-part series on BBC television. She is a member of PEN America Center and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. Wulf lectures internationally at institutions including the Royal Geographical Society, Royal Society, New York Public Library, and American Philosophical Society, as well as at literary festivals worldwide. Her work continues to contribute to the fields of narrative nonfiction, environmental history, and the history of science.
