Andrea Mitchell

Andrea Mitchell is a prominent figure in American broadcast journalism, with a career spanning more than five decades in political and foreign affairs reporting. Mitchell has covered eight White House administrations, 12 presidential races, and numerous global conflicts, including the fall of the Berlin Wall, 9/11, and the Iraq War.

Mitchell has been with NBC News since 1978, serving as chief foreign affairs correspondent since 1994. She previously held roles as chief White House correspondent and chief Congressional correspondent. After joining the Washington bureau of NBC News, Mitchell gained national attention for her on-the-ground reporting on the Jonestown Massacre and the Three Mile Island nuclear disaster.

As NBC News' chief foreign affairs correspondent, chief Washington correspondent, and host of MSNBC's "Andrea Mitchell Reports," Mitchell became a leading voice on U.S. foreign policy and international diplomacy. Her reporting has taken her to war zones in Iraq and Afghanistan, diplomatic talks in North Korea and Iran, and interviews with global leaders such as Fidel Castro, providing insight into international relations and global power dynamics. Mitchell's persistence in journalism was highlighted when she was forcibly removed from a press conference in Sudan after questioning the president about the ongoing genocide in Darfur.

Since joining NBC News, Mitchell has covered seven presidential administrations and every presidential campaign for the network since 1980, including serving as the lead correspondent assigned to Hillary Clinton's campaign. Her extensive reporting on the Clintons earned her the unofficial title of "dean of the Clinton press corps." Mitchell has anchored her show and reported for network broadcasts such as TODAY and NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt at campaign rallies, debates, and conventions. She was the first reporter to break the story of Democratic presidential nominee Sen. John Kerry selecting Sen. John Edwards as his running mate and co-moderated a Democratic presidential debate hosted by MSNBC and The Washington Post.

Mitchell authored the bestseller "Talking Back," a memoir detailing her experiences as one of the first women to cover five presidents, Congress, and foreign policy. The book explores her position as a female journalist in a male-dominated field. Mitchell is also a breast cancer survivor and an advocate for women's health and press freedom. She and her husband endowed the University of Pennsylvania with the Andrea Mitchell Center for the Study of Democracy.

Mitchell's career has been recognized with several journalism honors, including a Lifetime Achievement Emmy, the Los Angeles Press Club's Joseph M. Quinn Lifetime Achievement Award, the International Radio and Television Society Foundation's Giant of Broadcasting and Electronic Arts Honor, the International Women's Media Foundation's Lifetime Achievement Award, the MATRIX Award from New York Women in Communications, the Goldsmith Career Award for Excellence in Journalism from the John F. Kennedy School of Government, the Society for Professional Journalists' Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Peabody Career Achievement Award. After hosting "Andrea Mitchell Reports" on MSNBC, Mitchell continues to serve as NBC News's chief Washington correspondent and chief foreign affairs correspondent.
