Andre Ware

Andre Ware is recognized in American football history as the first African American quarterback to win the Heisman Trophy. Playing for the University of Houston Cougars under head coach Jack Pardee's run-and-shoot offense, Ware delivered a statistically dominant season, throwing for 4,699 yards, averaging 52 passes per game at a 63.1 percent completion rate, and recording 46 touchdowns. He set 27 NCAA records over 11 games and remains the only player to win a Heisman for a team on NCAA probation, a circumstance that limited his national television exposure prior to the award announcement. In addition to being a consensus First Team All-America selection, Ware became the 54th recipient of the Heisman Trophy and also earned the Davey O'Brien Award, UPI National Player of the Year, Chevrolet Offensive Player of the Year, and Southwest Conference Player of the Year honors.

Ware's journey included overcoming eligibility challenges, initially signing with Houston as a veer quarterback but attending Alvin Community College and working two jobs before joining the Cougars. His performance in the run-and-shoot system contributed to the Cougars becoming the first FBS team to feature a 4,000-yard passer, 1,000-yard rusher, and 1,000-yard receiver in the same season. Ware's achievement paved the way for future African American quarterbacks in college football.

In the NFL Draft, Ware was selected in the first round by the Detroit Lions with the seventh overall pick, joining running back Barry Sanders. His professional football career included playing in the Canadian Football League with the Ottawa Rough Riders, BC Lions, and Toronto Argonauts, where he backed up Doug Flutie. After his playing career, Ware returned to Houston to earn a bachelor's degree in marketing.

Ware transitioned to broadcasting, joining ESPN as a college football commentator and analyst, contributing to "College Football Live" and other ESPN studio shows, and calling games on ESPN and ABC. He also called games for SEC Network and was part of the ESPN College Football Friday Primetime team. Additionally, Ware has served as a member of the Houston Texans' radio broadcast team. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, is a member of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, and was part of the inaugural class in the SWC Hall of Fame. Ware's impact as a pioneer for African American quarterbacks and as a significant figure in college football continues to influence the sport.
