Ana Gasteyer is an Emmy Award-winning actress, comedian, singer, writer, and producer whose work spans Broadway, television, film, and music. Gasteyer began her career at Northwestern University, initially enrolling as a voice major before switching to theater studies after joining the campus improv comedy group. She further developed her comedy skills with the Los Angeles improv group The Groundlings, which served as a launching pad for her career in entertainment.
Gasteyer is widely recognized for her tenure as a cast member on the NBC sketch comedy and variety series "Saturday Night Live." During her six-year stint, she created memorable characters such as middle school music teacher Bobbie Moughan-Culp, NPR radio host Margaret Jo, and Lilith Fair poetess Cinder Calhoun, as well as delivering notable impressions of Martha Stewart, Celine Dion, and Hillary Rodham Clinton. She has revisited these characters in "SNL50: The Anniversary Special" and "SNL50: The Homecoming Concert."
Following her time on Saturday Night Live, Gasteyer has demonstrated range across both screen and stage. She played the mother of Cady Heron in the feature film "Mean Girls," written by Tina Fey. Her film credits also include "Wine Country," directed by Amy Poehler, and "Happiest Season," in which she co-starred with Kristen Stewart, Aubrey Plaza, and Victor Garber. On television, Gasteyer headlined the NBC comedy series "American Auto" as a new CEO navigating the automotive industry. Additional television credits include "Lady Dynamite" on Netflix, TBS's "People of Earth," ABC's "Suburgatory," and HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm."
On stage, Gasteyer originated the role of Elphaba in the Chicago production of the musical "Wicked" and later performed the role on Broadway. Her stage résumé includes "The Rocky Horror Show" and Tony-nominated productions "The Royal Family" and "Threepenny Opera," as well as originating the role of Debra in David Lindsay-Abaire's "Kimberly Akimbo." She starred as Queen Aggravain alongside Sutton Foster in a Broadway revival of "Once Upon a Mattress" at the Hudson Theatre. Gasteyer also originated the role of Mildred Layton in the Broadway production of "Schmigadoon!" and received a nomination for the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her performance.
Gasteyer is also a jazz vocalist and songwriter, known for her "Sugar & Booze" holiday tour. The retro-inspired album "Sugar & Booze" reached the Billboard Jazz Top 5 and was described by Billboard as "an uproarious homage to Christmas albums of old." The music inspired an eight-episode Audible series featuring Maya Rudolph, Patti LuPone, and Rachel Dratch. Her first album, "I'm Hip," received praise from The New York Times for her strong singing voice. Gasteyer continues to be recognized for her versatility across Broadway, television, film, and music.
