Amanda Vickery

Amanda Vickery is an English historian, writer, and broadcaster specializing in early modern and modern British history. She is professor of early modern history at Queen Mary University of London and is widely recognized for her scholarship on social and cultural history, particularly the Georgian period.

Born in Preston, Lancashire, Vickery was educated at Penwortham Girls’ Grammar School and earned her PhD in modern history from Bedford College, London (now part of Royal Holloway, University of London). She has also held academic appointments at Royal Holloway and at Churchill College, Cambridge. She holds an honorary doctorate from the Uppsala University.

Vickery’s research focuses on the late early modern and modern periods, spanning the seventeenth century to contemporary history, with particular attention to gender, domestic life, and society in eighteenth-century Britain. Her work has reached broad audiences through books, radio, and television presentations exploring historical life and culture.

She is the recipient of several major honors, including the Longman-History Today Prize, the Whitfield Prize, and the Wolfson History Prize, recognizing her contributions to historical scholarship and public history communication. In addition to academic writing, Vickery is known for making history accessible through broadcasting and public engagement.
