Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya is a Brooklyn-based transdisciplinary artist, educator, and activist whose work encompasses sculpture, textile, painting, large-scale murals, and participatory public art. With a background in neuroscience and a commitment to STEM advocacy, Phingbodhipakkiya is recognized for translating complex scientific ideas into accessible visual art. She holds a bachelor's degree in neuroscience from Columbia University and a master's degree in communication design from Pratt Institute. Her early career included research on Alzheimer's disease at Columbia Medical Center before she transitioned to a full-time career in multidisciplinary art.
Phingbodhipakkiya gained recognition with the project "Beyond Curie," a portrait series highlighting women who have made significant contributions to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. "Beyond Curie" received a Fast Company Innovation by Design Award and was promoted by March for Science. Her work expanded into civic activism during her tenure as a New York City public artist-in-residence at the Commission on Human Rights, where she developed the "I Still Believe in Our City" project. This initiative responded to anti-Asian hate by installing posters throughout the city featuring Asian Americans and messages such as "I did not make you sick" and "I am not your scapegoat." Art from this series appeared on the cover of TIME magazine.
Phingbodhipakkiya's practice includes large-scale murals, augmented reality experiences, 3D-printed sculptures, and interactive installations. She explores themes such as microscopic universes, familial memories, and collective action, often focusing on the experiences of marginalized communities. The national mural series "FINDINGS" highlights the research of women in STEM, aiming to inspire youth across the country. At Lincoln Center, she created "GATHER: a series of monuments and rituals," examining how ceremony, sound, and textiles can foster belonging and inscribe new meaning to memory. Phingbodhipakkiya also traveled across Thailand, engaging with textile communities and unveiling "Time Owes Us Remembrance" at the Bangkok Art and Culture Center, a monument to community ties and matrilineal heritage.
Her work is included in the permanent collections of the Museum of the City of New York, Goldwell Open Air Museum, Library of Congress, Museum of Chinese in America, and Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Phingbodhipakkiya has explored the creation of liminal spaces for healing and transformation. She has been recognized as a New York City Artadia Awardee, Jerome Hill Artist Fellow in Visual Arts, and Civic Practice Artist in Residence with Poster House and the San Francisco Asian Art Museum. She served on the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, advising on the role of art in community well-being. Through her art, writing, and public speaking, Phingbodhipakkiya challenges audiences to reimagine the world, using beauty, defiance, and collective memory as tools for social change.
