Aliko Dangote

Aliko Dangote is the founder and president/chief executive of Dangote Industries Limited, the largest conglomerate in West Africa. After completing business studies at Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Dangote returned to Nigeria and started a commodity trading business, primarily focused on cement, with a loan from his uncle. Following a period of study in Brazil to learn about manufacturing, Dangote shifted the company's focus from trading to manufacturing, aiming to meet the basic consumer needs of Nigeria's growing population.

By the early 1980s, Dangote had incorporated additional businesses and established the Dangote Group, expanding into sectors such as foodstuffs—including pasta, sugar, salt, and wheat—cement, haulage, and other industries. The Group operates in 17 African countries and is a market leader in cement production on the continent. Dangote Cement Plc, one of the Group's subsidiaries, is the largest listed company in West Africa and the first Nigerian company to join the Forbes Global 2000 Companies list. Other subsidiaries include Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals, Dangote Fertiliser Limited, Dangote Sugar Refinery, and NASCON Allied Industries. The Dangote Oil Refinery, Africa's largest refinery, began operations with Dangote holding a 92.3 percent stake in the $20 billion project.

According to Bloomberg Billionaires Index and Forbes, Dangote is among the wealthiest individuals globally and is recognized as the wealthiest Black individual, with a net worth of nearly $32.5 billion. He became the first billionaire in Nigeria and has been listed by Forbes as the 'Most Powerful Man in Africa' for six consecutive years. As the founder of the Dangote Group, he has contributed to Nigeria's transition from an import-dependent economy to one that is more self-sufficient and export-oriented in sectors such as cement, fertilizer, and petrochemicals. Dangote has also outlined a Vision 2030 Strategy to transform the conglomerate into a $100 billion pan-African industrial powerhouse, focusing on growth in key sectors, investment across the continent, and human capital development.

Dangote's influence extends beyond business. He serves on the board of the Corporate Council on Africa and is a member of the Steering Committee of the United Nations Secretary-General's Global Education First Initiative, the Clinton Global Initiative, the McKinsey Advisory Council, and the International Business Council of the World Economic Forum. He has received honors including the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger, Grand Commander of the National Order of the Republic of Benin, Commander of the National Order of Valour of Cameroon, and Commander of the Order of Merit of Niger. Time magazine has listed him among the 100 most influential people in the world.

Dangote is also active in philanthropy. He established the Dangote Foundation, the largest foundation in Africa, with an endowment of $1.25 billion. The foundation focuses on improving nutrition, health, and education in Nigeria and has contributed to efforts combating diseases such as polio, Ebola, and COVID-19, as well as providing disaster relief. Dangote and Bill Gates have partnered on a $100 million initiative to address malnutrition in Nigeria. Dangote's career in industrialization, manufacturing, and philanthropy continues to influence business leaders and economic development across Africa.
