Alicia Angel is a New York City-based singer, songwriter, visual artist, activist, and TEDx speaker whose career spans children's television, advocacy, and public speaking. As a songwriter with Universal Music Publishing Group, Angel has co-written more than 35 songs for Emmy-nominated and award-winning preschool programs, including Nickelodeon's "Dora the Explorer" and "Dora and Friends: Into the City," as well as "Sesame Street," Sesame Studios, and Universal Kids' "Snug's House." Her songwriting credits also include placements on MTV, Bravo, Lifetime, and "Say Yes to the Dress," reflecting a broad presence in both children's and mainstream entertainment.
Angel's work is closely connected to social justice advocacy. As a survivor of violence and a former domestic violence hotline worker, she has used her personal experiences to inform her advocacy efforts. Her productions addressing physical, emotional, and sexual violence against women have been performed at universities, and she has spoken and performed at the National Press Club for the 30th Anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act at the invitation of The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Angel has also used her music and art to raise awareness about issues such as female genital mutilation and public health.
Angel was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis, a rare, incurable autoimmune neuromuscular disease that causes fatigue and muscle weakness. Symptoms began with a drooping eyelid and double vision and progressed to significant physical challenges, including difficulty walking and speaking. Angel has used her diagnosis as a platform to raise awareness and empower the disabled community.
Angel has served as a spokesperson for myasthenia gravis awareness and has appeared on the TEDx stage at TEDxPrincetonWomen, where her talk, "The Adventure of Uncertainty," explored how adversity and the unknown can foster personal growth and authenticity. She has spoken at music industry events, emphasizing responsible media representation and sharing her experiences as a songwriter whose work has reached millions of children worldwide.
In addition to her music and advocacy, Angel's paintings have been exhibited in New York City art galleries, highlighting her multidisciplinary approach to creativity. Through live performance, public speaking, and visual art, Alicia Angel continues to contribute to the fields of music, children's media, disability advocacy, and the arts.
