Alex Gorsky

Alex Gorsky is an American business leader, board director, and veteran of both public service and private industry who is widely recognized for his transformative leadership in global healthcare and corporate strategy. Born in 1960 in Kansas City, Kansas, Gorsky graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, served six years as an Army officer earning Airborne wings and a Ranger tab, and later completed his MBA at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1996. After leaving the Army, he joined Johnson & Johnson in 1988 as a sales representative with Janssen Pharmaceutica and steadily rose through leadership roles in sales, marketing, and management.

In 2012, Gorsky became the seventh person in the company’s history to serve as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Johnson & Johnson, a position he held until January 2022, when he transitioned to Executive Chairman and was succeeded by Joaquin Duato. He fully retired from executive duties in January 2023 after more than three decades with the company. During his tenure, Gorsky led major investments in research and development, helped guide the rapid development of the Janssen single‑shot COVID‑19 vaccine, and oversaw strategic growth across the Pharmaceutical, Medical Device, and Consumer Health divisions, helping maintain Johnson & Johnson’s reputation as a leading global healthcare innovator. The company was repeatedly recognized on Fortune’s “Most Admired Companies” list and for its contributions to global health under his leadership.

Beyond Johnson & Johnson, Gorsky is a respected voice in corporate governance and public policy. He serves on the boards of Apple, IBM, JPMorgan Chase, and the Travis Manion Foundation, and is involved with advisory boards at the Wharton School and other institutions. He has been honored with awards including the Ripple of Hope Award by Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights and the BENS Eisenhower Award for his leadership and service.
