Al Groh

Al Groh is a respected figure in American football, known for his decades-long career as a player, coach, and analyst. Born on July 13, 1944, Groh began his football journey as a defensive back at the University of Virginia, where he developed the foundation for his deep understanding of the game.

Groh transitioned into coaching shortly after his playing days, steadily building a reputation as a disciplined and detail-oriented leader. Over the years, he held numerous coaching positions at both the collegiate and professional levels, including roles in the NFL with teams such as the New York Giants, where he served as defensive coordinator and played a key part in their Super Bowl XXV championship season. He later became head coach of the New York Jets from 2000 to 2001.

At the college level, Groh is perhaps best known for his tenure as head coach at the University of Virginia from 2001 to 2009, where he led the Cavaliers to multiple bowl appearances and earned ACC Coach of the Year honors in 2002. His coaching style emphasized discipline, preparation, and strong defensive play.
