Afro-Cuban All Stars

The Afro-Cuban All Stars is a renowned Cuban band led by Juan de Marcos González, dedicated to celebrating and preserving the rich tapestry of Cuban music. Their repertoire seamlessly blends various Cuban styles, including bolero, chachachá, salsa, son montuno, timba, guajira, danzón, rumba, and abakua.

Formed in 1996, the ensemble brought together legendary Cuban musicians whose careers traced back to Havana's vibrant music scene of the 1950s. Notable members included pianist Rubén González, bassist Orlando "Cachaíto" López, and vocalists such as Ibrahim Ferrer, Pío Leyva, Manuel "Puntillita" Licea, Raúl Planas, and Félix Baloy.

Their debut album, A Toda Cuba le Gusta, was recorded in 1996 at Havana's EGREM Studios and released in 1997. This album was part of a trilogy of recordings produced during that period, alongside the Buena Vista Social Club and Introducing...Rubén González.

Over the years, the Afro-Cuban All Stars have continued to produce music that honors Cuba's musical heritage. Their discography includes albums such as Distinto Diferente (1999), Live in Japan (2004), and Step Forward: The Next Generation (2005). They have received four Grammy Award nominations and can be seen in the Oscar-nominated "Buena Vista Social Club" documentary by Wim Wenders and the Tony Knox documentary "Salon of Dreams."

Under the direction of de Marcos González, the Afro-Cuban All Stars have played a pivotal role in bringing Cuban music to international audiences, ensuring that the island's diverse musical traditions continue to thrive on the global stage. They have also opened the doors to a new generation by welcoming young musicians into the band.
