Adiba Nelson

Adiba Nelson is an author, disability rights activist, freelance journalist, and keynote speaker whose work explores the intersection of race, motherhood, and inclusion. Her memoir, "Ain't That a Mother," offers an account of Black motherhood, cerebral palsy, and intergenerational trauma. The book has been recognized by Essence, Bustle, Ms. Magazine, and Shondaland as a significant contribution to contemporary American literature.

Nelson began her writing career by self-publishing the children's book "Meet ClaraBelle Blue" to address the lack of representation for children who are both disabled and Black. The book has sold more than 7,000 copies and is available in multiple languages across 20 countries. Her body of work includes the children's books "Oshún and Me: A Story of Love and Braids" and "Hazel's Best Day: A Story of Community, Accessibility, and Pride in Being Yourself," both of which focus on themes of community, accessibility, and individuality inspired by real people with disabilities.

Nelson is the subject of the Emmy-winning documentary "The Full Nelson." She has served as executive producer and creative consultant on the television series based on her memoir. Nelson delivered a TEDx talk titled "Skating Downhill: The Art of Claiming Your Life" and contributes regularly to Arizona Public Media's Arizona Spotlight. She has also spoken at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History.

Nelson speaks nationally on diversity, inclusion, accessibility, and women's empowerment, with a focus on disability rights and advocacy. Her keynote address, "The Beauty of Adult Rebellion," addresses diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) from a disability perspective. She has led workshops and delivered keynote addresses for parents and educators across the country.

Nelson received the Doug Noffsinger Solidarity Award for her advocacy on behalf of disability rights and the LGBTQ+ community. Her work has supported Tucson's trans community and other LGBTQ+ groups, creating opportunities and spaces for marginalized populations. Through her writing, public speaking, and media contributions, Nelson continues to challenge systems and promote inclusion and accessibility.
