Adam Winkler

Adam Winkler is the Connell Professor of Law at UCLA School of Law, where he specializes in constitutional law, the Supreme Court, and gun policy. Winkler has developed an academic career that connects legal scholarship with public discourse. Before joining the UCLA faculty, he clerked on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and practiced law in Los Angeles. Winkler is a graduate of the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University and New York University School of Law, which recognized him with the Legal Teaching Award for alumni in legal academia.

Winkler is the author of two works of legal history. His book "Gunfight: The Battle over the Right to Bear Arms in America" examines the history and debate surrounding gun rights and regulation in the United States. His subsequent book, "We the Corporations: How American Businesses Won Their Civil Rights," explores the historical development of corporate personhood and constitutional protections for business, tracing the roots of Citizens United v. FEC. "We the Corporations" was a finalist for the National Book Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award, the American Bar Association's Silver Gavel Award, the California Book Award, and received the Scribes Award. Winkler also served as co-editor of the "Encyclopedia of the American Constitution."

Winkler's scholarship has been cited in Supreme Court cases on the First and Second Amendments, and he is among the most cited law professors in judicial opinions. He teaches constitutional law and the Supreme Court Simulation at UCLA School of Law and has served as a Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar.

Winkler frequently comments on legal issues and has appeared on Face the Nation, CNN, NBC Nightly News, C-SPAN, Newshour, ABC News, All Things Considered, Morning Edition, and Marketplace.
