Adam Ottavino Biography
Adam Robert Ottavino is a veteran Major League Baseball (MLB) relief pitcher, known for his distinctive "sweeper" and sinker combination and impressive durability out of the bullpen. A Brooklyn native, Ottavino grew up in Park Slope and starred at Berkeley Carroll School before playing collegiately at Northeastern University—where he earned America East Pitcher of the Year honors in 2005 and set several strikeout records. Drafted 30th overall by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2006, he made his MLB debut as a starter on May 29, 2010.
Ottavino reinvented himself as a reliever with the Colorado Rockies (2012–2018), where he showcased his strikeout prowess and became the team's closer in 2015 before undergoing Tommy John surgery. He signed with the New York Yankees in 2019—becoming the first Yankee to wear the number 0—and posted a sterling 1.90 ERA over 73 games that season. After stints with the Red Sox in 2021 and a strong three‑year run (2.06 ERA in 2022) with the Mets, he briefly returned to the Yankees in 2025.
Over a 15‑season major league career, Ottavino appeared in over 726 games, notching a 41‑43 record, 46 saves, a 3.48 ERA, and 862 strikeouts across 744 innings.
