After high school, Peirsol attended the University of Texas, training under coach Eddie Reese and earning recognition as NCAA Swimmer of the Year. As a member of the University of Texas Longhorns, he contributed to the USA swim team’s success at the Athens Olympics, winning gold in the 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke and the men's 4x100-meter medley relay, setting world records in the process.
Peirsol continued his dominance at the Beijing Olympics, retaining his 100-meter backstroke title and winning gold in the men's 4x100-meter medley relay. He broke the 100-meter backstroke world record six times and set seven world records in the 200-meter backstroke, including a time of 1:51.92 at the World Swimming Championships in Rome. He was named USA Swimming's Athlete of the Year after winning three gold medals at the FINA World Championships.
Peirsol retired from professional swimming after achieving his competitive goals. He was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame and continues to hold the world record in the 200-meter backstroke.
