Jamie Cuticchia offers more than two decades of accomplishment-laden experience in the biomedical research community. Focusing initially on bioinformatics, Jamie has incorporated genomics, proteomics, and clinical data analysis into his research. Most recently he earned a J.D. degree, magna cum laude, in the evening program at North Carolina Central University while continuing his vigorous research activities.
After completing his doctoral work at the University of Georgia, creating methodologies and tools for genome assembly, Jamie moved directly into an Assistant Professorship at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where he played an important role in the Human Genome Project. As Director of Data Acquisition and Curation for the GDB Human Genome Data Base, he was responsible for coordinating data collection from over 20 International research facilities in order to electronically publish the human genetic map. Later, as Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Medical Genetics at the University of Toronto, Jamie went on to assume the lead role as Managing Director of the GDB and also created the Ontario Center for Genomic Computing, one of the Top 500 computing centers at the time serving over 3,000 users.
Although Jamie's academic and not-for-profit positions allowed him to garner well in excess of $120,000,000 in academic funding; he also has been involved in the biotechnology industry. He served on the senior management team of ChemGenics Pharmaceuticals which was merged with Millennium Pharmaceuticals in 1998. Jamie was a scientific founder of New Chemical Entities which was acquired by Albany Molecular Research. He also served as Vice President for Genomic Information, in a part-time capacity, for Ceres Genomics in Malibu, California.
Jamie moved to Cary, North Carolina in 2001 to create the Bioinformatics Department at the Research Triangle Institute. Seeking new challenges and seizing a unique opportunity, Jamie joined the Duke Medical Center where he was named Duke Bioinformatics Scholar. Part of this role was the management of several projects under the NCI caBIG® program.
Throughout his career Jamie has looked for exciting and challenging opportunities. He has worked in vertical and matrix-managed structures. He enjoys both participating in, as well as leading teams. He has directly managed groups in excess of 50+ with annual budgets in excess of $5,000,000.
He has in excess of 60 publications including 5 books. His newest book Genetics: A Handbook for Lawyers was published by the American Bar Association Press in Summer 2010.
