Asra Nomani is an Indian American journalist, author, and activist known for her reporting on Islam, terrorism, women’s rights, and American politics. Born in Mumbai, India, she immigrated to the United States with her family as a young child and grew up in Morgantown, West Virginia. After earning a bachelor’s degree from West Virginia University and a master’s degree in international communications from American University, she joined The Wall Street Journal as a reporter in 1988, covering industries ranging from aviation and international trade to travel and culture.
Nomani’s career took a dramatic turn after the September 11 attacks, when she traveled to Pakistan to report on the war in Afghanistan. In 2002, her close friend and fellow Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl was kidnapped and murdered while pursuing a story in Karachi. The tragedy profoundly shaped Nomani’s work and public voice. She later co-founded the Pearl Project, an investigative journalism initiative that examined the circumstances surrounding Pearl’s murder and became a major reporting collaboration at Georgetown University.
As an author, Nomani has written several books exploring identity, spirituality, reform, and politics, including "Tantrika: Traveling the Road of Divine Love" and "Standing Alone: An American Woman’s Struggle for the Soul of Islam." She became widely recognized for advocating greater rights for Muslim women, particularly through campaigns challenging gender segregation in mosques and promoting reform within Islamic communities. Her activism and personal story were featured in the PBS documentary "The Mosque in Morgantown," and actress Archie Panjabi portrayed her in the film "A Mighty Heart," which chronicled the Daniel Pearl case.
In recent years, Nomani has become an outspoken commentator on education, extremism, free speech, and identity politics. She has contributed to outlets including The Washington Post, Fox News, and The Federalist,, often taking controversial and independent positions that have drawn both praise and criticism. Across journalism, activism, and public speaking, Nomani has built a career centered on challenging orthodoxies and advocating for what she describes as reform, moral courage, and open debate.
