Samuel Logan

Samuel Logan is the founding editor of Southern Pulse | Networked Intelligence, an independent human intelligence organization focused on security, politics, and energy in Latin America. Through Southern Pulse, he maintains contact with well over 800 security professionals across Latin America, as well as Russia, China, Iran, and Turkey. He is a senior writer for the International Relations and Security Network, and has written for Jane's Intelligence Report, Americas Quarterly, and The Counter Terrorist Magazine. He is author of This is for the Mara Salvatrucha: Inside the MS-13, America's Most Violent Gang (Hyperion), and has a forthcoming book on Los Zetas, Mexico's most sophisticated organized criminal enterprise.

A seasoned keynote speaker, Logan has addressed US Intelligence Agencies and their senior analysts, members of US Congress, the Parliamentary Forum on Small Arms and Light Weapons, the Overseas Advisory Council, the RAND Corporation's Insurgency Board, federal and state law enforcement agencies, conferences on private security, NGOs, and universities around the United States, including George Washington University and the National Defense University.

Logan's work has attracted members of the Inter-American Dialogue, the Eurasia Group, the RAND corporation, Control Risks Group, The Olive Group, StratFor, the European Security Institute, the International Crisis Group, agents with the Drug Enforcement Administration, Customs and Border Patrol, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, analysts with US Southern Command, the Cambridge Energy Research Associates, the Federation of American Scientists, Triple Canopy, and other organizations that maintain open channels of dialogue with him about organized crime in Latin America and other matters pertaining to security in the Western Hemisphere.

Logan has featured on NPR's The Diane Rheme Show and On Point. He has been interviewed by the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Washington Times, CNN International, The Council on Foreign Affairs, the Washington Post, the Gerson Lehrman Group, The Nation magazine, France 24 Television, Swiss World Radio, National Public Radio affiliates, and others about topics pertaining to the organized crime and the drug trade.

Logan has lived and worked in Latin America for nearly 12 years. He has lived in Mexico and Central America and a number of South American countries. He has an MA in International Policy and has studied the economics of black markets, organized crime, and Latin America's criminal groups for nearly a decade. He has written extensively on organized crime in Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, Central America, and Mexico. And with others, Logan has published stories related to organized crime in Rolling Stone, Playboy, Maxim, GQ, and Men's Vogue among others.
