John E. Jones III Biography
John E. Jones III has served as a federal judge on the United States District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania since 2002. Jones has presided over numerous noteworthy cases, including Kitzmiller v. Dover, in which he held it unconstitutional to teach intelligent design within a public-school science curriculum. Prior to his federal judgeship, Jones served in former Pennsylvania Governor and Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge's administration. In 2006, Jones was named one of Time magazine’s “Time 100.†He also received a Rave Award for Policy from Wired. Recently, Jones was named one of the 25 most influential graduates of his alma mater, Dickinson College. In 2007, Jones and the Kitzmiller case were featured in a “NOVA†film, Judgment Day: Intelligent Design on Trial, for PBS. The program won a Peabody Award and a Silver Gavel from the American Bar Association.
