Jean-Philippe Vergne Biography
Before joining the Ivey School of Business as an assistant professor, Jean-Philippe Vergne got a PhD in Strategy at HEC Paris, where he taught strategy & leadership on the graduate, executive MBA, and executive education programs.
His research, which received the Grigor McClelland Doctoral Dissertation Award, focuses on the role played by socially contested organizations in the evolution of capitalism. More specifically, JP studies the influence of pirate organizations on innovation since the seventeenth century, and the evolution of the global arms industry since 9/11.
He co-authored the book ‘The Pirate Organization: Lessons from the Fringes of Capitalism’, already published in French, and forthcoming in English in Spring 2012 at Harvard Business Review Publishing. The book is accompanied by an experimental rock song produced by the book's readers and authors, funded from author's royalties, and published under a creative commons license (www.organisationpirate.com).
