Doug Allan

Doug Allan OBE was a Scottish wildlife cameraman and photographer known for his work in polar regions and underwater environments. Allan developed an early interest in marine biology, which he pursued at the University of Stirling. He spent eight years with the British Antarctic Survey in Antarctica as a research diver, scientist, and photographer before transitioning to a full-time career in cinematography.

A pivotal meeting with David Attenborough led Allan to work on the documentary series "Living Planet." This experience motivated him to acquire a 16mm cine camera, which he used to film emperor penguins and later sell footage to the BBC. Allan went on to contribute to landmark wildlife documentaries, including "The Blue Planet," "Planet Earth," and "Frozen Planet," as well as productions for BBC, Discovery, and National Geographic. His work often featured groundbreaking footage, such as killer whales collaborating to hunt seals in "Frozen Planet," and he spent extensive periods documenting polar bears and other wildlife in extreme environments.

Allan also appeared on camera, presenting the BBC series "Ocean Giants" and serving as a presenter on "Operation Iceberg." He contributed to radio programming, with his audio diary from "Wildlife Special – Polar Bear" gaining recognition as a radio program. Allan's scientific background as a research diver and station commander for the British Antarctic Survey informed his approach to wildlife filmmaking and environmental storytelling.

Allan received eight Emmy Awards, five BAFTAs, and two Polar Medals for his contributions to polar research and exploration. He was appointed an OBE for his work in broadcast media and environmental awareness. Allan was a two-time recipient of both the Fuchs Medal and the Polar Medal. He passed away while trekking in Nepal, leaving a legacy of wildlife cinematography that brought audiences closer to the natural world and advanced the field of natural history filmmaking.
