Checkey Beckford, Emmy Award-winning Black NYC broadcaster with nearly 20 years in media covering coast-to-coast; from rural Illinois to California wildfires. I’ve engaged with people from all walks of life. A champion of diversity in the workplace on NBC New York/Telemundo47 Diversity Council and at home raising biracial children in an increasingly divided America.
My return to New York 11 years ago was both a professional and personal milestone; New York was my first home after emigrating from Jamaica with my single mother at five years old.
Even at that young age I knew the immensity of our journey, the responsibility I had to make my mother’s sacrifice— leaving everything she’d ever known to provide me a better life— worth it. I’ve brought that experience to my headlining roles for the "American Foundation for the University of the West Indies" fundraising galas as well as the "New York Consul General-Jamaica’s 61st Independence Gala".
