Cathy Whitlock's career as an author, magazine writer, design marketer, sought-after keynote speaker, and interior designer is remarkably diverse. Her book, Designs on Film: A Century of Hollywood Art Direction (HarperCollins), represents the marriage of her two passions -- design and the cinema. She is also the author of the book re-de-sign (Fairchild Books) and a contributing writer for Traditional Home magazine and The Huffington Post. Her work also appears in Veranda, Architectural Digest, Capitol File, American Airlines Celebrated Living, Flower, Array, the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) Icon, and internationally for Glamour UK and Four Seasons Magazine. She also writes the blog Cinema Style which chronicles trends and inspiration on film and reaches 70 countries.
Whitlock's keynote speeches demonstrate how the use of interior design -- called production design in the film industry -- in movies can transport the audience to new worlds of luxury, highlight the ornament of the everyday, offer a vision of the future, or evoke the realities of a distant era. Whitlock illuminates the role of art direction and production design in the creation of the most memorable moments in film history, from the massive Roman architecture in Ben Hur, to the digitally enhanced city of Gotham in Batman Begins.
A graduate of Parsons School of Design and a member of ASID, Whitlock has more than 22 years of experience in the interior design industry. She appeared as a frequent on-air personality and spokesperson on Home and Garden Television's top-rated show Decorating with Style, and has been profiled in the Wall Street Journal, Fox News, and the Fine Living Channel (now the Cooking Channel).
Formerly with Universal Pictures and the late British film producer Sir Lew Grade's ITC Entertainment, Whitlock worked on the marketing campaigns of Coal Miner's Daughter, Animal House, Jaws, and the Academy Award-winning film The Deerhunter. She was also Manager of Consumer Card Marketing with the American Express Company where she worked on the original "cause-related" cultural funding campaign.
