Whit Taylor Biography
Whit Taylor is an American cartoonist, writer, editor, and public health educator whose work explores personal narrative, cultural identity, and social commentary. Taylor holds a Bachelor of Arts in cultural anthropology from Brown University and a Master of Public Health in social and behavioral sciences from Boston University School of Public Health. After initially pursuing film, Taylor shifted to comics following experiences at comics conventions and shows, leading to a diverse body of work that includes self-published minicomics, graphic anthologies, and comics journalism within the independent comics industry.
Taylor first gained recognition with early autobiographical comics. Taylor received a Glyph Award and two nominations for the autobiographical comics "Watermelon" and "Boxes," as well as an Ignatz nomination for the miniseries "Madtown High." The book "The Anthropologists," published by Sparkplug Books, was selected as a Notable Comic for Best American Comics. Taylor expanded into longer-form works with titles such as "Montana Diary," which documents a road trip across Montana and combines millennial humor with observations about the state's history. The book earned an Ignatz Award nomination for Outstanding Minicomic and an honorable mention in the Publishers Weekly Graphic Novel Critics Poll.
Taylor's backgrounds in anthropology and public health influence the choice of topics, with much of the autobiographical and comics journalism work examining cultural and identity-related issues. Taylor's comics have been published by The Nib, The New Yorker, Rosarium Publishing, BOOM!, Sparkplug Books, Kus, Ninth Art Press, Illustrated PEN, and others. Taylor is also the author of "Ghost Stories" (Rosarium Press) and the ongoing "Fizzle" series through Radiator Comics, and has written "The Greater Good: People, Power, and Public Health."
In addition to creative work, Taylor has contributed to the comics community as an editor and critic. Taylor has served as a juror for the Ignatz Awards and as a small press comics journalist, writing articles for The Comics Beat, Panel Patter, The Comics Journal, The Tiny Report, Nat Brut, and Comics Workbook Magazine. Editorial credits include "SubCultures: A Comics Anthology" (Ninth Art Press), "Comics for Choice" (co-editor), and freelance editing for First Second and Street Noise Books. Taylor's multidisciplinary background in public health, anthropology, and the arts informs a perspective that resonates with audiences interested in storytelling, identity, and social issues.
