Dr. Shanna B. Tiayon Biography

Shanna B. Tiayon, known as The Wellbeing Dr., is a social psychologist, keynote speaker, writer, and consultant specializing in workplace culture and employee wellbeing. Tiayon holds a doctorate in sociology with a focus on social psychology. Her academic research has centered on mental and physical health in minority populations, supported by fellowships from the National Science Foundation and the Ford Foundation. She began her career as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer and later held senior leadership roles in international development and human resources across public and private sectors, including positions in Cameroon, Chad, Rwanda, and Uganda. Tiayon is fluent in French.

While pursuing her doctorate, Tiayon identified a gap in human resources training related to supporting the psychosocial needs of employees, which are critical for workplace productivity. This observation led to the founding of Yes Wellbeing Works, a consulting firm dedicated to advancing employee wellbeing through research, training, and strategy development. The firm offers services designed to foster belonging, psychological safety, and employee esteem in organizational settings. Tiayon has been recognized as a Culture Amp Top 25 Emerging Culture Creator for her contributions to workplace wellbeing.

As a speaker, Tiayon combines scientific analysis with personal narrative. Her TEDx talk, "How to Live in an Unkind World," addresses unkindness as a form of interpersonal trauma, drawing on personal experiences to highlight the impact of workplace and societal behaviors. She presents on topics such as "Employee Wellbeing: The New Bottom Line Metric" and "Psychological Safety: The Scaffolding for Success," covering issues related to mental health, stress, work-life integration, and the effects of racism on wellbeing. Tiayon has participated in forums including a panel at a Department of Defense Leadership Forum.

Tiayon's writing has appeared in publications such as Greater Good Magazine, The Guardian, and Yes! Magazine. She has been recognized as a National Magazine Award finalist and is a Best American Travel Writing award winner. Her work has also been featured in Longreads, Food and Wine, Sojourners, and Narratively. Frequently cited as an expert in mental health, Tiayon contributes to Greater Good Magazine, the publication of the Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley, where she translates academic research into practical insights for leaders and individuals.

Dr. Shanna B. Tiayon Speaking Topics

  • Employee Wellbeing: The New Bottom Line Metric

Terms like "Quiet Quitting", "The Great Resignation", "Burnout", and "Toxic Culture" are all too familiar in the post-pandemic corporate landscape. If you're steering a ship that doesn't recognize Employee Wellbeing across diverse demographics and departments, then you're headed straight for an iceberg. Employees no longer tolerate spaces where belonging, esteem, and psychological safety are not fundamentally addressed. This keynote defines Employee Wellbeing, addressing how it differs from other organizational measures like engagement, and why it is critically important in creating a successful and sustainable workforce with evidence-based business outcomes.

This session is ideal for organizations where:

    • Innovation and productivity are top demands.
    • "Fast-paced environment" is in every job description.
    • Talent retention is an ongoing challenge.
    • Workplace culture is only a theory on a whiteboard.

    Participants will leave with:

    • A foundational understanding of the four constructs of Employee Wellbeing: Basic Needs, Psychological Safety, Esteem and Belonging.
    • Clarity surrounding the organizational outcomes of each construct.
    • A step-by-step process for putting Employee Wellbeing strategy into practice.

  • Psychological Safety: The Scaffolding for Success

Teams cannot innovate if they fear failure. Performance does not improve in isolation. Talent will not thrive consistently in all seasons.

Safer spaces are necessary for success in 2024.

Psychological safety is a term that has increased in the corporate vernacular, with limited explanation about what exactly it is and why organizations should care about it. This keynote defines the construct of psychological safety, contextualizes its relevance in the workplace, and elucidates how it’s measured, demonstrating evidence-based outcomes. In this transformative and practical session, participants will gain immediate tools to increase psychological safety and impact organizational results.

This session is ideal for audiences:

    • Working in industries reliant on innovation, precision, collaboration
    • Composed of senior human resources professionals and organizational leaders with authority to impact internal policies, procedures and practices.
    • Working in organizations who identify as or want to identify as having a strong employee-centric brand.

    Participants will leave with:

    • A shared understanding of psychological safety and the research-based outcomes.
    • Knowledge of demographically diverse experiences of psychological safety across employee cohorts.
    • Key strategies to assess and build psychological safety based on areas of desired impact.
