Prince Ea: Deep Reflections Through the Art of the Spoken Word

“It is our only home, we must globally warm our hearts and change the climate of our souls and realize that we are not apart from nature, we are a part of nature.”

Prince Ea is a rapper, spoken word artist, filmmaker, activist, and speaker who delivers his moving messages through digital media.  Born in St. Louis, Prince Ea received his degree in anthropology from the University of Missouri St. Louis, where he studied on a full scholarship.  He is known for his important, if controversial, topics and powerful speaking voice- a performer with a purpose.

In 2008, Ea won VIBE Magazine’s rap contest, which awarded him recording equipment and a dedicated full page article in the magazine.  He soon gained recognition, fans, and followers on his YouTube account, but realized that he wasn’t truly happy and decided to shift his focus to a selfless one.  Respected and admired, he has been called “powerful” by Iyanla Vanzant and a “visionary filmmaker” by Oprah.  He spends his time speaking to students across the country and addressing conference attendees on motivation and living your passion, as well as creating content that speaks to society.

In 2012, he took a hard look at the history and legality of marijuana, through a spoken word message that went viral.  In this conversation with an Obama impersonator, Prince Ea discusses the role of the government and pharmaceutical companies in the decision to keep marijuana illegal.  He looks at the positive and negative health effects, as well as the societal impact, in this poem that he backed with research.  He has also been seen as a spokesperson for MyHeritage DNA, a company challenging the idea of race.  Prince Ea was part of a campaign to discuss how DNA testing creates more social acceptance, as we are all a combination of backgrounds.

Prince Ea looks at politics, technology, religious institutions, and society as a whole.  He calls attention to societal problems in a unique way- through moving poems told in his strong, resonating voice.

One particular piece, “Can We Auto-Correct Humanity?” examines society’s focus in this digital era.  While we all feel connected on social media, Prince Ea explains how this is not really a connection, but a division.  His poignant message starts off strong:

Did you know the average person spends 4 years of his life looking down at his cell phone?
Kind of ironic, ain’t it?
How these touch-screens can make us lose touch
But it’s no wonder in a world filled with iMac’s, iPads and iPhones
So many “i”’s, so many selfies, not enough “us”‘s and “we”’s
See, technology
Has made us more selfish and separate than ever

His lyrics resonate in his spoken word piece, “I Am NOT Black, You are NOT White”, which looks at the labels society puts on us, dividing one another by race.  He questions how the world would be if we did not merely look at our exterior façades.

He states:

When there is division, there will be conflict
And conflict starts wars
There-fore every war has started over labels
It’s always us… versus them
So the answer to war, racism, sexism, and every other -ism
Is so simple that every politician has missed it
It’s the labels…
We must rip them off
