Lenny McAllister Biography
Lenny McAllister was slicing lunch meat behind a Pittsburgh deli counter when he decided he wasn’t finished. He had left Davidson College years earlier. He went back, and graduated at 30.
That instinct — that the first act doesn’t get to write the ending — has shaped everything since. McAllister has spent two decades as a broadcaster, political commentator, nonprofit executive and educator, and in August 2026, he published, "A Venn Diagram of One: An American Story," on Frederick Douglass Books, distributed by Simon & Schuster.
What makes McAllister unusual is who vouches for him. The book carries forewords from two men at opposite poles of American politics: former RNC chair Michael Steele and MSNOW political analyst Dr. Jason Johnson. Newt Gingrich called McAllister, "someone with a lot to teach others." Ben Jealous, former president of the NAACP, wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times that, "we are both civil rights men, and civil rights work is Bill of Rights work." Leon Ford, recipient of the Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Award, describes him as, "a man of faith and a principled thought leader who selflessly invests in the full spectrum of communities he serves."
McAllister has worked with the late Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. as a special adviser and with former Heritage Foundation president Kay Coles James. He has been featured by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation, which called his work, "a really great guide, especially to young people," and at NAACP events. Very few Americans have standing in both rooms.
McAllister is an award-winning member of the team at Newsradio KDKA in Pittsburgh, where he hosts a weekly program and serves as a political analyst. Over two decades, he has appeared on CNN, Fox News, SiriusXM, NPR, CBS News and Radio New Zealand, and hosted and produced television on the Pittsburgh Cable News Channel. His commentary has run in USA Today, the New York Post, the Chicago Defender, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, The Root and the Dallas Morning News, including the New York Post’s America 250 commemorative edition. He has taught Black American history as an adjunct professor and led a statewide education organization serving 165,000 students.
McAllister has also paid for his convictions. In 2012 he spoke from the steps of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court against a law that threatened to block thousands of voters; it was overturned before that November’s election. In 2015 he used a live television editorial to dismantle stop-and-frisk while defending the police chief who supported it. He has stood alone more than once, and says so plainly from the stage.
The second acts closest to McAllister are the ones he talks about most. He guided his family through his father’s year-long recovery from a near-fatal shooting. He watched his wife graduate with honors in biology at 53, years after surviving the abuse that ended her first attempt at college.
Audiences come away with a question rather than a position: what do we hold in common before we start measuring what divides us — and what might a second act look like for a person, a community, or a country turning 250?

The Exhausted Middle: The Majority That Stopped Showing Up (and How to Bring Them Back)
The loudest voices in American life represent the smallest share of it. Most Americans are not in the fight — they are tired of it, and they have quietly stepped back from the civic square and left it to people who enjoy the noise.
Lenny McAllister calls them the exhausted middle, and he argues they are the largest unorganized bloc in the country: ticket-splitters, the fastest-growing share of new registrations, people who hold a mix of positions no party will sell them and who have concluded that participation isn’t worth the cost. They haven’t given up on the country. They’ve given up on the arena.
McAllister knows the territory firsthand. Conservative outlets assumed his book title was a shot at the left; progressive readers assumed it was a shot at the right. That is what the middle looks like from inside — unclaimed by anyone and therefore spoken for by no one. In this keynote he examines what drove people out, why their silence has handed disproportionate power to the fringes, and what actually brings someone back. He has watched it happen: a longtime Republican in Western Pennsylvania who had quit local politics entirely read his book and decided to run for county party chair.
The talk ends with a charge rather than a lament. The exhausted middle does not need to become louder. It needs to stop confusing exhaustion with permission.
Audiences will learn:
Who the exhausted middle actually is, and why conventional political categories keep missing them How disengagement by the many amplifies the influence of the few What re-engagement looks like in practice — and why it rarely starts with an argument

A Venn Diagram of One: Leading When You Belong to No One
In the same two-year stretch, Lenny McAllister trained activists for the Republican National Committee and served as special advisor to the Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr. He has convened coalitions that ran from the ACLU to Americans for Prosperity. His book carries forewords from Michael Steele and Dr. Jason Johnson — men who agree on almost nothing except him.
This keynote is about what that costs and what it’s worth. McAllister makes the case that coalition-building is not compromise, that holding a position without joining a tribe is the hardest leadership posture available, and that organizations and communities fail when everyone in the room arrived by the same door.
He is candid about the price. Refusing to pick a side has cost him opportunities, income, and allies. He explains why he keeps doing it anyway, and what leaders gain when they stop requiring agreement as the price of partnership.
Audiences will learn:
Why coalitions built on shared purpose outlast coalitions built on shared enemies How to work productively with people whose premises you reject What principled independence actually costs, and how to decide whether to pay it
