Susie Dent

Susie Dent is a British lexicographer and etymologist recognized as the resident word expert in "Dictionary Corner" on Channel 4's game show "Countdown." Dent holds a BA in modern languages from Somerville College, Oxford, and a master's degree in German from Princeton University. She joined Oxford University Press, where she contributed to the compilation of English dictionaries, a role that led to her television career on "Countdown."

Dent is the longest-serving member of the show's on-screen team, with more than 5,000 appearances. On each episode, she adjudicates the letters rounds and provides commentary on the origins of words and phrases, a segment that has become a staple of the program. Dent also appears on the comedy spin-off "8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown," as well as panel shows including "Would I Lie to You?" and "Richard Osman's House of Games." Her broadcast work extends to BBC Breakfast, Newsnight, and BBC Radio 4's "Woman's Hour."

Dent is the author of several books on language and etymology, including "What Made the Crocodile Cry?", "How to Talk Like a Local," "Word Perfect," and "An Emotional Dictionary." She authored a series of annual Language Reports for Oxford University Press, tracking the evolution of English vocabulary and slang. Dent's debut novel, "Guilty by Definition," is a linguistic mystery set in Oxford and was shortlisted for the British Book Awards in the Crime & Thriller Book of the Year category. Her writing has appeared in the Independent on Sunday, the Telegraph, and the Daily Mail, and she contributes columns to Radio Times and The Week Junior.

Dent co-hosts the podcast "Something Rhymes with Purple" with Gyles Brandreth and has presented live shows including "The Secret Lives of Words" and "Word Perfect." She has served as a spokesperson for Oxford University Press, judged the Costa Book Awards and the Academy Excellence Awards, and is Vice-President of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading. Dent was awarded an MBE in the King's Birthday Honours for her contributions to language and literature. She is a keynote speaker on linguistics and English language, addressing audiences from schools and book clubs to corporations worldwide.
